St. Joseph Cemetery, established on January 22, 1849, holds the distinction of being Cleveland’s oldest Catholic cemetery. Founded by Bishop Louis Amadeus Rappe, it was created to serve the city’s growing population of Irish and German Catholic immigrants. Prior to its establishment, many Catholic burials took place at Erie Street Cemetery, with several later reinterred at St. Joseph to ensure a dedicated resting place aligned with Catholic traditions.
